I walked into Mom’s room this afternoon. She was awake and alert, and getting her neck IV removed. She’s already had her nitro patch taken off, and the med student who was removing the IV said “See, she’s off the oxygen, too.” So now all she’s got is the IV in her arm, the NG tube for feeding and meds, and catheters for waste.
More important than all that, however is this: she was bored. She’s not well — her stroke has affected her sensory perception, and her mouth doesn’t work quite properly (though there are signs of improvement there too, many words are coming out clear as a bell) — and she’s not going to be well for a long time, but she was there, and knew what was going on.
That’s a huge improvement from last week.
I know I have to steel myself for the “one step back” events that are sure to come, as well as the likely plateauing of her progress. But for now, I’m feeling better about her recovery than I have since she left the ICU.
As my dad used to say, “We’ll take what we can get.”

My sister said she appreciated my efforts in taking care of Mom and her affairs.

Aimless wandering in the Barnes & Noble near the hospital brought me to the mystery section. There I saw The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. I’m not much of a mystery reader (nor contemporary fiction, for that matter), but Doppelganger has talked about this series in glowing terms so often,
If you haven’t started reading McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series yet, I’m just going to assume you’ve been busy saving orphans and kittens from burning buildings and marauding pirates and rabid mongooses.
Or something like that. Good on you. I, on the other hand, who have now officially read every book in the series, am envious of you. The riches of these stories await you like so many ripe, succulent, late-harvest plums. Or something like that.
that I thought I’d take a chance.
I’m glad I did. I’ve only read the first book, and I could very easily run out and buy the rest — but I won’t, because that would mean I would be done too soon.

I had three bright spots yesterday:
1) The TextMate Halloween Special.
2) Plagioclase came back to stay a few more days with me (and brought Albite and his mother, so we don’t have to worry about them being 3 hours away) and gave me hugs.
3) Mom talked. She wasn’t entirely understandable, and her voice is weak, but she talked.
Nice anniversary presents all ’round, I think.
