Where’s the outrage?

A story found at the very bottom of the Google US news:

Los Angeles officials announced criminal and civil charges on Thursday against a hospital accused of dumping an elderly homeless woman in a gown and slippers in a rundown section of the city’s downtown.

I am speechless — I would have never read this story if I hadn’t been bored and clicking links in Google News. Why isn’t this story more important than concrete?

Who are all these people? Oh, right.

So The Big Football Game is going on today. I attended several OSU/Michigan games as a kid (my mom got season tickets for decades), but the last was during the Bo/Woody era. Having grown up in one of the cities, and now living in the other, I don’t really care who wins and I don’t even usually pay attention.

But today I had to get to the hospital, which is next door to the stadium. What to wear? Scarlet? Maize? I compromised and wore orange. Much more suited to my hair color anyway.

I am appalled.

So Plagioclase and I went to MicroCenter the other day to poke around. We had a few things in our cart, and were in the checkout line when I heard the clerk asking the customer for their name, address, and email address (in addition to getting their signature on the credit card slip).

I felt some discomfort, and asked Plagioclase if he had enough cash to get the stuff in the cart. He put back a couple of items but kept the Dust-off three-pack which was on super sale.

We get to the clerk, scan the items, give him the cash… which he very carefully places on the counter and then proceeds to ask us our name, address and email address. I wanted to just leave (Dust-off isn’t that special), but Plagioclase proceeded to give him fake information.

Really, MicroCenter, must you pry so?

But even scarier were the people in front of us in line who gave their personal information, associated with their credit card, to a flunky who’s paid minimum wage.

No wonder phishing scams work.

Old ladies and hospitals don’t mix.

So I just want to know one thing: who didn’t follow protocol, so Mom ended up with C. Diff.? Yeah, yeah, I know, elderly lady, risk of being hospitalized, blah blah. But it set her recovery back more than a week, and gave us a huge scare w.r.t. more stroke and possible dialysis (no on both accounts). I just hope she doesn’t end up with MRSA. I’m just sayin’…

What was that about “one step back?”

I guess I spoke too soon.
